Rangers are reportedly considering a late move for Ross Barkley after Chelsea terminated his contract on Monday – and Ibrox legend Ally McCoist has given his verdict on the “tremendous” star on TalkSPORT (Tuesday, 8.35AM).

Barkley, 28, joined Chelsea from Everton in January 2018 after 55 goal involvements in 179 games for the Toffees. But after just 100 appearances in four and a half seasons with Chelsea, he has been made a free agent by the Blues.

Reports say Rangers are showing interest in signing Barkley this summer. The deadline might not be of significance, given he is now a free agent. But the Gers will have to submit a list of players to register for the Champions League.

McCoist was asked about Barkley’s situation and believes having been made a free agent, he will have something lined up. He describes the player as “tremendous”, but thinks the 33-time England international could be lacking in fitness.

“Whoever takes him will be taking a punt on him. You hope he would be fit, but he won’t be match fit. You’d think he’d have something lined up if he is leaving. Got to get back playing. A tremendous player when he came onto the scene.”

What a signing Barkley would be for Rangers. But, it is a move that suits Barkley, too. His loan spell at Aston Villa did not go to plan and while there has been glimpses at Chelsea, it is likely to dissuade Premier League clubs over a deal.

He needs to join a club that still have the glitz and the glamour of a big club. One that are fighting for trophies and are in European competition – but more importantly, a club that will give him game time. Rangers look like the perfect fit.
