Rangers are one of a number of clubs linked with a move for Liverpool striker Divock Origi as the Anfield side try and recoup some of their outlay on the Belgian – but they don’t make much sense given the shape of Steven Gerrard’s Ibrox squad.
According to 90min, Rangers and Celtic join West Ham, Southampton, Newcastle and Crystal Palace in the chase for the Liverpool outcast as he enters the final 12 months of his Anfield contract.
However, with Alfredo Morelos, Kemar Roofe, Fashion Sakala and Jermain Defoe all at the club, there’s not really any need for another striker at Ibrox just now – unless Morelos or Roofe were to be sold, but even that doesn’t really seem like it would trigger Rangers into spending millions on Origi.
Origi mustered a mere 181 minutes of football for Liverpoool last season, and Gerrard can’t afford to be gambling on someone coming good after years of waiting for him to come good elsewhere.
The Scottish champions have been linked with a move for Dutch midfielder Joey Veerman that could see him become the second most expensive signing in Rangers’ history.
With the reported move for Veerman covering an area of the pitch where it was clear Rangers needed reinforcement, that would likely be the end of any major spending by the Light Blues this summer.
Although Rangers have the prospect of a Champions League windfall to come if they can reach the groups, having run at a considerable loss over the last decade, Rangers’ hierarchy will be likely to use that to steady the ship financially a little and ease the reliance on shareholder loans to cover the shortfall.
Perhaps cynically, the fact the report mentions both Rangers and Celtic adds a certain air of ‘agent-hocking-player’ to the story with the mention of the Old Firm being interested always a surefire way to generate some buzz.
