Rangers-linked defender Gary Cahill is set for a medical with Championship side Bournemouth, according to a report, putting to an end any talk of the veteran arriving in Glasgow this summer.

Sky Sports report that the former Chelsea and England defender will undergo a medical with the Cherries today as Rangers prepare to face Alashkert in the Europa League playoffs.
Cahill was most recently at Crystal Palace but left the Eagles at the end of last season when his contract came to an end, exiting Palace as one of 22 players released over the summer.
Rangers had been linked with a move for Gerrard’s former England teammate but, given the options available at Ibrox, never seemed like a realistic option for Cahill.
With Bournemouth and Norwich City both reportedly keen to sign him, he was always likely to stick around south of the border rather than try his luck in Scotland with the Light Blues.
Rangers aren’t exactly short of defensive cover either with Connor Goldson, Fil Helander, Leon Balogun, Jack Simpson and Niko Katic all part of Gerrard’s squad.
Reports (The Sun 15/08, p63) had also claimed that Rangers’ Champions League exit at the hands of Malmo played a big part in ending the Gers’ pursuit of the veteran defender, with his hefty wages likely outside of the Gers’ financial reach.

The Cherries have won two of their opening three Championship fixtures under Scott Parker this season as they aim to return to the Premier League and adding the experience of two-time Premier League winner Cahill will surely give them a big boost.
