Rangers legend Barry Ferguson thinks Celtic’s appointment of Ange Postecoglou could work in the Parkhead side’s favour – but admits he has a “very strong feeling” it will benefit Rangers even more.

The Australian was a surprise choice to replace Neil Lennon at Celtic Park and Ferguson admits that it isn’t a surprise that Hoops fans have taken to the former Socceroos manager.

Despite that, the Rangers legend thinks it gives Steven Gerrard an opportunity to really get his side up for defending their title as they go up against a new-look Celtic side.

“It’s no surprise that the Parkhead fans have already taken to him,” Ferguson told the Daily Record.

“Put it this way, Postecoglou looks like the kind of big Greek-Australian you don’t want to mess with, so I completely understand why his appointment has created excitement across the city.

“But, as good as he might prove to be for Celtic, I have a very strong feeling his arrival in Scotland may be even better for Rangers.

“If ever there was a moment for Steven Gerrard to send out a message to his own players and get them right back up on their toes for the battle ahead, it’s now.

Look, winning a title is one of the hardest things to achieve in football. But even harder is to retain it.”

Rangers can’t afford to be complacent with Champions League carrot dangling

With the winner of this season’s Scottish Premiership getting automatic qualification to the Champions League group stages, winning the title come May is even more important for Rangers.

Rangers also have two qualifying rounds for this season’s competition to contend with and Gerrard’s side will need to be at their best if they are to make it to the group stage.

The Light Blues will discover who they face later this month with the first leg ties taking place an August 3/4.
