Rangers defender Connor Goldson has been told to think very carefully about leaving Ibrox next summer, with Kyle Lafferty warning him.

Goldson’s Rangers contract situation still not sorted

Goldson was a favourite of former Rangers boss Steven Gerrard but went into this season with his contract running down.

The centre back is out of contract at the end of the season, meaning Rangers could lose Goldson for absolutely nothing.

A £3million signing from Brighton and Hove Albion, Goldson has now racked up almost 200 appearances for Rangers.

With Goldson hailing from the West Midlands and Gerrard now at Aston Villa, some wondered whether there could be a reunion in the offing.

That hasn’t really shown any signs of happening, but Goldson is just weeks away from being able to sign a pre-contract agreement.

Lafferty sends message

It’s unclear whether Rangers will actually look to keep hold of Goldson; that his deal has been allowed to get to this position raises major question marks.

Rangers fans have been raging with Goldson of late, after he indicated that Gers players had lost some hunger this season.

Former Gers striker Kyle Lafferty has now warned Goldson that the grass may not be greener away from Ibrox.

Lafferty thinks the only reason to leave Rangers would be for the Premier League – but even then, he won’t be valued as he is in Glasgow.

Lafferty urged Goldson to ‘hold fire’ and stay with Rangers rather than walk away next summer.

“There’s a saying that the grass isn’t always greener. And there aren’t many clubs in England where you think: ‘I want to leave Rangers to go there.’ Connor has been an exceptional player for the club and if he leaves it’ll be a sad day for Rangers fans,” said Lafferty.

“He will be on decent money and if the club have offered him a new contract it’ll be on improved terms. It’s just whether he wants to go to the Premier League and test himself against the so-called world-class players down there. If it’s anything other than that, I’d tell him to consider his options carefully.”

“He was on the front line for Rangers last season, playing every game, and was a pivotal player. He wore his heart on his sleeve, fought for every ball and was a big reason why they achieved success. But not many places will make him feel so valued like that. In England, he’ll just become another player. I know he’s not a Rangers fan so it’s easy for me to say it because I am. I know how it feels as a supporter.”

“He’ll look at everything. But I’d tell him to hold fire, taste Champions League football next season with Rangers and try to take the club as far as they can go. Playing in front of a full house of Rangers fans – you just don’t get that type of atmosphere anywhere in England,” he added.
