Ibrox side Glasgow Rangers and Mark Warburton parted company last week.

According to Rangers chairman Dave King, Mark Warburton was using the club as a stepping stone. Warburton was appointed the Gers manager in the summer of 2015.

The Englishman guided Rangers to the Scottish Championship title in the 2015-16 season. However, things did not go according to plan in the Scottish Premiership this season, and Warburton and the Ibrox outfit parted company last week.

In a statement on Rangers’ official website, chairman King has explained the decision to part ways with Warburton. King has also claimed that the former Brentford boss was using the club as a stepping stone.

“There were rumours that the management team (presumably their agent) was negotiating with English clubs and, in one instance, I was informally approached to ask if the Club would waive compensation if the management team was to leave,” King wrote on Rangers’ official website.

“While this was unsubstantiated by direct confirmation from the Club in question, I was alert to a conversation that Mark Warburton had with me after joining the Club in which he advised me that his long-term ambition was to manage in the EPL and he viewed Rangers as a stepping-stone to achieve this. His comments to the media simultaneously reinforced his present unhappiness at the Club.”

One suspects that Rangers fans will not happy after reading the aforementioned comments. The Gers are a massive club, one of the biggest in the world, and the Ibrox faithful would not be pleased to hear that they were considered as a stepping stone.

One can understand Warburton’s desire to manage in the Premier League, though. After all, the English top flight is the most popular domestic league in the world. Perhaps his next job would be at a Premier League club…
