Rangers are ‘closing in’ on the signing of Middleborough striker Britt Assombalonga, according to a report, as the Light Blues look to strengthen ahead of the new campaign.
According to TeamTalk, Assombalonga is willing to take a major wage cut to join the Light Blues after falling out of favour at the Riverside.
The striker has hit 49 goals in 167 appearances for Boro but hasn’t lived up to expectations after a £15million move from Nottingham Forest.
With his contract up in the summer, there are a host of Championship sides reportedly chasing the striker’s signature but the prospect of Champions League football looks like swaying it in Rangers’ favour.
Boro boss Neil Warnock has frozen the striker out recently, not even including him amongst his subs for games as he prepares to let the DR Congo star move on this summer.
The potential signing of Assombalonga will raise question marks over the long-term futures of Alfredo Morelos, Cedric Itten, Jermain Defoe and Kemar Roofe, with the Gers unlikely to bolster their frontline without at least one of them moving on.
At 28, Assombalonga would be a very interesting acquisition for the Gers.

If he can recreate the form that saw Boro splash out £15million for him, Rangers will be getting an incredible bargain by signing him for free.
