The Rangers manager Steven Gerrard became a legend in the other half of the city before his move to Ibrox.

The Rangers manager, Steven Gerrard, has praised Everton’s Merseyside derby display – despite his allegiance to rivals Liverpool.

Speaking at a press conference broadcast via Rangers’ official Youtube channel on Tuesday, Gerrard did however claim to have ran even further than his Liverpool counterpart, Jurgen Klopp, after Divock Origi scored a stoppage-time winner for the Reds.

Asked what he thought of Klopp’s actions, for which the German has since been charged by the Football Association, the Gers boss said: “It was a great football match, and I think you have to mention Everton as well.

“I think it’s the strongest Everton side I’ve seen for a good while. They were fantastic on the day and I think they probably deserved a point out of the game, but unfortunately for them Liverpool got the winner and it’s fantastic for all us Reds.”

Everton, who ground out a 0-0 draw during last season’s Anfield meeting, created several clear-cut chances that could on another day have earned them a rare win at their rivals’ home ground.

Gerrard’s comments come less than 24 hours after the Daily Mirror reported that he is considering bringing the Toffees midfielder, Kieran Dowell, to Rangers on loan in January.

Kieran Dowell of Everton arrives for the Carabao Cup third round match between Everton and Southampton at Goodison Park on October 2, 2018 in Liverpool, England.

The newspaper claims Gerrard’s previous complaints about a lack of creativity have put Dowell, who has appeared just twice for Everton this season, on Rangers’ radar.

How accurate is the Rangers boss’s assessment?
