Former Celtic keeper Craig Gordon has tipped his former Old Firm rival Allan McGregor to win this season’s Player of the Year award after a stunning season for Rangers – and confessed he’s even tried to convince McGregor to come out of international retirement ahead of Euro 2020.

The veteran Rangers star has been in fantastic form for Steven Gerrard’s side this season, keeping 16 clean sheets from 24 Premiership fixtures as the Gers romped to the title for the first time in a decade.

Gordon insists there are a “few” Rangers players who will be in the running for individual honous at the end of the season and is looking forward to renewing his rivalry on the pitch with McGregor after winning the Championship with Hearts.

“I’m sure there’s a few in that Rangers team who will be looking at it but he’s definitely one of them,” Gordon told the Daily Record. “I’m sure there’s a few in that Rangers team who will be looking at it but he’s definitely one of them.

“Without a doubt he could still do it for Scotland. I’ve already texted him to say, ‘Come on, get yourself out of retirement and let’s get the band back together’.

“He’s been fantastic this season and I’m glad to see he’s got a new contract. Hopefully I’ll get to play against him, even if it’s just a couple of more times.”

While McGregor is arguably in the best form of his career, a return to the international fold might not actually be a good move for him.

The added rest from not having to travel with the Scotland squad and play three times in a week during internationals has allowed McGregor to keep himself in top condition for Rangers.

If he did return, it would be hard to argue against him taking over the number one shirt for Scotland but the veteran will likely be at home watching when Steve Clarke’s side take on England, Croatia and the Czech Republic this summer.
