Rangers manager Steven Gerrard has named his side to face Alashkert in tonight’s Europa League playoff first leg at Ibrox – and Gers fans on Twitter are delighted to see Calvin Bassey retain his place in the starting XI.

The Rangers boss has made a host of changes to the side that cruised past Dunfermline in the League Cup last weekend but it is the selection of Bassey ahead of Borna Barisic that has fans talking.

Glen Kamara and Kemar Roofe both miss out through suspension while injury rules Ryan Jack out of contention.

Niko Katic, Jermain Defoe and Fashion Sakala were all left out of the European squad so can play no part in either game against the Armenians.

The Light Blues have reached the group stage of the Europa League in each of the last three seasons under Gerrard, making it through to the last 16 in their last two attempts.

Alashkert beat Kairat Almaty 3-2 on aggregate in the previous round to set up the playoff clash with Rangers but lost their last domestic game 2-0 at home to FC Van in the Armenian Premier League.

There will be no away fans in attendance once again after UEFA prohibited clubs from making tickets available to visiting supporters – however that changes from the group stage.
