Leeds United are about to embark on their third season back in the Premier League, and it’s fair to say that things have been going rather well for the Whites so far.
They’ve spent massive money, claimed some big scalps, and, most importantly, survived their first two seasons back in the top-flight.
A lot was expected of Leeds when they were promoted back to the Premier League, and, in a lot of ways, they have delivered.
Marcelo Bielsa’s side in 2020/21 were one of the most entertaining teams in the league, while the United fans made Elland Road a cauldron during 2021/22.
However, one thing that Leeds haven’t quite delivered yet is a truly marquee signing.
Yes, the likes of Rodrigo, Luis Sinisterra and Diego Llorente have arrived for big money, but with all due respect, none of those players are superstars.
Many were expecting Leeds to make a splash and bring a big name to Elland Road upon their return to the Premier League, and that seemingly was the plan at one point.
Indeed, Andrea Radrizzani admitted back in 2020 that he tried to sign Zlatan Ibrahimovic, while he stated that Edinson Cavani was another target that summer.
“In addition to his quality, Cavani could contribute with his physicality and adapt here, but I’ve never talked about him with the coach,” Radrizzani said.
“Having said that, we’ve certainly thought about him and we’ll see, given he’s still available on a free transfer.”
There were also links to the likes of Sergio Aguero and Real Madrid’s Marcelo last summer, but, for one reason or another, that blockbuster signings still hasn’t arrived at Elland Road.
Leeds have done plenty of business this summer, but there is still one more signing that needs to be made – a striker, and if they’re still in the market for a marquee name, there’s one player who could be targeted.
Indeed, two years after failing to land Edinson Cavani, perhaps Leeds should be thinking about a move for his fellow countryman, Luis Suarez.
It was thought that a move to River Plate was all sewn up for Suarez, but after the Argentine giants were eliminated from the Copa Libertadores, Suarez has quashed that move.
That leaves the Premier League as an option for the Uruguayan, and while Aston Villa may be favourites due to the striker’s connection with Steven Gerrard, Leeds could easily muscle their way into the mix.
The Whites certainly have the money to tempt a player like Suarez, and they also have the history to intrigue the Uruguayan.
Factor in that there is a much clearer space in Leeds’ squad as Villa are already struggling to rotate between Danny Ings and Ollie Watkins, and you can see why Elland Road may be an appealing destination.
It’s not as though Suarez wouldn’t be a star for Leeds either. Let’s not forget, despite being 35, this is a player who’s netted 34 goals in the last two seasons.
There are no concrete links as of yet, but if Radrizzani still wants to make a marquee signing at Leeds, he should move for the former Liverpool ‘phenomenon’.
