HITC Football keeps track of every time the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) rules out a goal at the World Cup. FIFA also introduced a semi-automated offside system for Qatar 2022.
This winter’s tournament is the second World Cup to feature the use of VAR after its use at Russia 2018. FIFA announced following the 21st edition of its quadrennial tournament four years ago that 455 incidents were checked across the 64 fixtures played with 20 reviewed.

FIFA has built on its early VAR technology for Qatar 2022 with the implantation of a semi-automatic offside detection system. It uses 12 dedicated cameras to track the ball and all players on the field. Together, the cameras can calculate their exact position on the pitch.

The cameras take recordings 50 times per second and are located underneath the roof of the stadiums being used. In addition, FIFA uses an inertial measurement unit (IMU) sensor in the core of the football. The IMU transmits data 500 times per second to expedite reviews.
Together, the camera footage and IMU produce an animation for the VAR to review using an automatically selected kick point. The VAR then informs the on-field official of any actions.
And it did not take long for the VAR and semi-automated offside technology to feature at the 2022 World Cup with Ecuador seeing one goal chalked off during the opening game…
