ESPN pundit Steve Nicol tore into Liverpool duo, Joe Gomez and Joel Matip for their poor performances during their side’s 3-0 defeat against Wolves.
Jamie Carragher also aimed a veiled dig at the pair, who had a rough evening against Julen Lopetegui’s side to say the least.
For starters, the Cameroonian defender conceded an own goal due to his indecision just a couple of minutes into the contest. While the Englishman failed to clear his lines properly in the build-up to Craig Dawson’s goal, while gave Ruben Neves a free pass to triple his side’s lead.
ESPN pundit Steve Nicol lays into Joe Gomez & Joel Matip
After watching Liverpool get taken apart by Wolves on Saturday, ESPN pundit Steve Nicol reserved criticism for Joe Gomez and Joel Matip, who underwhelmed massively on the day.
“Liverpool started this game just backing off and asking to be ran at. Two-down after 15 minutes. [Joe] Gomez and [Joel] Matip were as a centre-back partnership were absolutely horrendous”, pundit Steve Nicol told ESPN.

“Matip starts off with an own goal which basically comes about because he doesn’t make a decision and he ends up deflecting the ball in off the post.”
The pair were deservedly criticised after Liverpool got beaten by Wolves
Considering the hosts are one of the least threatening sides in the Premier League going forward and were sitting in the relegation zone before the contest, it is remarkable how the side were made to look like they were unstoppable by the visitors at the Molineux Stadium.
However, Liverpool duo Joe Gomez and Joel Matip have been a shadow of their former selves throughout the campaign, and the same was the case against Wolves, as ESPN pundit Steve Nicol rightly broke down.
With Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate set to be injured for a while, the centre-pairing must pull their socks up and right their wrongs.
