Paul Merson has claimed in The Daily Star that managers do not want the Tottenham Hotspur managerial role due to Harry Kane.

The former Arsenal star, who now works as a pundit for Sky Sports, has said that no one wants to take charge of Tottenham because of the uncertainty over the future of Kane.

The Englishman has said that the only way that Spurs can attract a top-quality manger is to hand Kane a new deal with a massive salary.

Merson believes that it would then see Kane stay at Spurs, and that would be appealing to prospective managers.

The pundit wrote in The Daily Star: “Tottenham still can’t find a new manager. But it’s not a great job that one, is it? No disrespect to Spurs. I’ve played against them many times in my career. I know what they’re about. They’re a good club. A class club. With a great stadium.

“But if I’m a top manager looking at it from the outside, I’m thinking: ‘What’s happening with Harry Kane?’ Any plans you make go out the window on day one if Kane leaves Spurs – and it sounds like he might. The thing is, if Kane leaves Spurs, others will too. That team could break up.

“So it’s just not that attractive a job right now because of all the uncertainty. Look who’s failed there in recent times too. Mauricio Pochettino is a great manager. Couldn’t win there. Jose Mourinho is one of the greatest ever, and he struggled.

“I can see why managers are not exactly queuing around the block. Spurs might have to give Harry Kane a new contract. Throw money at him to stop him leaving. Otherwise it could be hard to bring in a new manager.”

Merson is right about Tottenham becoming a weaker team if they sell Kane, but managers not being willing to come to Spurs because of him can be argued against.

90min reported earlier this month that as many as 20 managers are interested in the Tottenham managerial role.

Spurs have not appointed a new manager as the season is not finished yet.

Jose Mourinho was sacked as the Tottenham boss only last month, and Ryan Mason was placed in charge of the first team until the end of the season.

Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy will surely have a plan and will be working hard behind the scenes.
