Mark Warburton is reportedly under huge pressure at Ibrox going into a Sunday’s potentially make or break Scottish Cup clash.

Despite leading Rangers back into the Scottish top flight after four years away, and re-establishing the club in the chasing pack for European football, not all of Ibrox is united behind Mark Warburton.

And Sky Sports pundit Davie Provan believes the fans could cost the 54-year-old his job with a Scottish Cup fifth round tie against Morton potentially crucial, the Daily Record reports.

Warburton’s policy of bringing in ageing veterans and unproven youngsters, albeit dictated by a lack of transfer funds, has divided the supporters this season, while his stubborn refusal to alter his passing philosophy means he is yet to get the best out of a number of first-team players, most notably misfiring marquee signing Joe Garner (below).

This, coupled with a 4-1 hammering at Hearts and fortunate home draw at Ross County, has reportedly piled the pressure on the former Brentford boss ahead of Sunday’s Scottish Cup clash with the Championship high-flyers.

And Proven believes that the reaction of the Rangers supporters could make up the director’s minds.

Perfect Mark Warburton replacement? Ex-Rangers favourite could be the answer

“I remember an old Celtic director telling me many years ago that the board don’t sack a manager, the supporters sack the manager,” former Bhoys winger Provan said in quotes reported by the Daily Record.

“I think if Rangers were to lose at the weekend the supporters would make their feelings pretty clear. It could be the straw that breaks the camel’s back.

“Rangers is the type of club that the manager doesn’t get time and nor should he expect time.”

Performances may have been disappointing in recent weeks as the gap between Rangers and Celtic stretches to 27 points but, with a lack of investment from above, Warburton appears to be operating with one hand tied behind his back.

Therefore, he surely cannot be blamed entirely. Nor is it a given that any other manager would thrive in similar circumstances.
