The former Dutch star played 15 games for Rangers in 2004 and is currently unnattached.

In the space of less than a week, Mark Warburton’s position at the helm of Glasgow Rangers Football Club suddenly appears a lot less secure. A 4-1 hammering by Hearts preceded a fortunate home draw with Ross County and, as a result, Rangers are now third in the table while the gap between themselves and Celtic, for what it’s worth, now stands at 27 points.

And while Warburton should not be vilified on the back of two poor results, he did return Rangers to the top flight after all and immediately re-establish the club amongst the European chasers, concerns over his transfer policy and passing philosophy continue to divide the fanbase.

Though, if he was to receive his P45 in the post, there’s one former Rangers favourite on the market who could perhaps be coaxed into making a dramatic return to Ibrox.

Frank De Boer, once one of the most in-demand young coaches in European football and strongly linked with Tottenham and Liverpool, received a harsh reminder of the fickle nature of the sport earlier in the campaign.

Despite guiding Ajax to four straight Eredivisie titles, a feat unmatched in Dutch football history, De Boer lasted just 85 days at Inter Milan, posting a win record of 35 per cent.

His stubborn refusal to alter his tactics to suit the skills of his players, plus high-profile falling outs with Marcelo Brozovic and Mauro Icardi, not to mention a sequence of truly humiliating Europa League displays, meant the 46-year-old’s position rapidly became untenable.

Therefore, he no longer has some of Europe’s biggest clubs eating out of the palm of his hand. While Rangers could still consider themselves fortunate to attract a coach of his calibre and potential, the move could suit both parties.

De Boer, a former fans favourite who knows the league, knows the supporters, could be revitalised away from the scrutiny and the bitter taste of Inter’s poisoned chalice.
