“Problem”: Chris Sutton suggests that player who left Celtic in 2019 had a poor World Cup

Celtic fans watching the World Cup Round of 16 earlier today would have recognised Timothy Weah in action as the Netherlands suffered a 3-1 defeat to the United States.

Chris Sutton was certainly keeping an eye on the clash, as he called Louis van Gaal a “wily operator” after full-time, while also inadvertently questioning whether Weah was “good enough” at the World Cup.

What’s the story?

Well, the 49-year-old didn’t actually mention Weah by name, although he stated that the United States may have progressed further at the World Cup in Qatar if they had someone better than the 22-year-old up front.

Sutton was very pleased when Celtic signed the United States international on loan from Paris Saint-Germain back in January 2019, describing it as an “exciting” move for the Bhoys.

Unfortunately, Weah struggled in Glasgow, scoring just four goals in 17 appearances before returning to PSG in the summer of 2019, where Lille then picked him up in a deal worth £9m.

Nevertheless, the 22-year-old has done well for himself, winning the Ligue 1 title at Lille in 2021 while also becoming a regular for the United States on the international scene.

Weah actually netted for the United States in their 1-1 draw against Wales, one of just three goals scored by the USA at the World Cup.

Christian Pulisic netted one in the 1-0 win over Iran, while Haji Wright scored a bizarre goal against the Netherlands to make it 2-1 in the Round of 16, before Denzel Dumfries sealed the 3-1 win shortly after.

Celtic look set to make another move like Timothy Weah deal

As you may have heard, Georgios Giakoumakis could be leaving Celtic Park following a breakdown in contract negotiations, according to the Daily Record.

Therefore, Ange Postecoglou could be forced to make another move like the January deal Brendan Rodgers completed for Weah, by bringing in an attacking reinforcement midway through the campaign.

According to the Scottish Sun, South Korea’s World Cup hero Gue-sung Cho is a target for Celtic in January, so he could be someone set to arrival in a similar deal to Weah, albeit on a permanent basis instead of a loan.
