Tottenham Hotspur boss Ange Postecoglou is tempted to promote Alfie Dorrington into first-team reckoning if Eric Dier leaves in January.

Alfie Dorrington could be in line for first-team action at Tottenham Hotspur if Eric Dier leaves the club in early 2024.

That is according to Football Transfers, who claim that Ange Postecoglou is planning to promote Dorrington in January.

Pretty much everything is going well for Postecoglou right now with Tottenham still unbeaten in the Premier League this season.

Title talk is obviously a little premature but a strong January window would certainly give Spurs fans real belief of a top-four finish.

There could be some departures in January too, with Postecoglou ultimately still in the process of shaping his squad.

Eric Dier may well leave the club having failed to start a single Premier League game under Postecoglou this season.

90Min highlighted before the summer transfer deadline that Sporting, Monaco, Crystal Palace and Celtic all fancied signing Dier.

The 29-year-old may well be tempted to go in January and Football Transfers claim that Postecoglou is currently planning to replace him with Alfie Dorrington.

Dorrington is only 18 but has been making a real impression this season and has been training with the Tottenham first team.

Postecoglou has also praised Dorrington for really standing out around the Tottenham training setup this season.

Postecoglou seemingly likes what he sees and is keen to promote Dorrington rather than splash cash on another centre back in January.

Tottenham would be wise to still sign another defender

We can understand the excitement around Dorrington.

The teenager looks to be a huge talent both in terms of his defensive ability and his quality on the ball out from the back.

Dorrington and Ashley Phillips are both top prospects but asking these teenagers to step up to the Premier League is a humongous leap.

Tottenham aren’t blessed with defensive depth at the moment with Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven lacking real competition given Dier’s role under Postecoglou.

Spurs woulds still be wise to explore deals for a homegrown defender; the likes of Tosin Adarabioyo, Lloyd Kelly and Trevoh Chalobah were all targets over the summer and make sense now.

That would at least allow Dorrington to come along gradually rather than throwing him in at the deep end in 2024.
