Police in Peru have gone viral after making an arrest dressed as the official mascots of the 2026 World Cup.

Clutch, Maple and Zayu are the mascots for the World Cup and have been spotted at the various stadiums around the USA, Canada, and Mexico.

While Peru may not be at the World Cup, the nation is still enjoying the festivities, but it ultimately led to one criminal’s downfall.

Police use World Cup mascot design to arrest criminal

Two Peruvian officers dressed up as Clutch and Maple in order to blend in and secure the arrest of a criminal during the opening game of the tournament between Mexico and South Africa.

Once they had learned that the man they were looking for was a huge football fan, they used the disguises to capture Carlos Cabrera, 48.

Col. Carlos Alcantara, head of the Green Squadron, delivered a statement to The Associated Press explaining the move behind the operation, saying: “Thanks to intelligence work, we realized that this person was a diehard football fan and was caught up in World Cup fever.

“Therefore, we decided to disguise personnel as World Cup mascots so we could approach him without raising suspicion and apprehend him.”

Footage was posted by the police on TikTok in which they shared footage of the arrest, including using a metal sledgehammer to break down the doors.

This is also not the first time that Peruvian Police have used disguises to help with catching well-known criminals.

In the past they have dressed up as other fictional characters, including the Grinch, Freddy Krueger, Deadpool and Wolverine.
