Shaun Goater has spoken highly of Leeds United striker Patrick Bamford on Racing Post.

The former Manchester City striker has outlined his theory why Bamford is doing better for Leeds in the Premier League this campaign than he did in the Championship last season.

According to WhoScored, the former Chelsea and Nottingham Forest striker has scored eight goals and provided one assist in 11 Premier League games for the Whites so far this season.

During the 2019-20 campaign, the 27-year-old – who cost Leeds £7 million in transfer fee when they signed him from Middlesbrough in the summer of 2018, according to Sky Sports – found the back of the net 16 times and gave two assists in 45 Championship matches for the Whites, according to WhoScored.

When told that Bamford is averaging a one goal every 118 minutes in the Premier League and scored one goal in every 216 minutes in the Championship last season, Goater said on Racing Post: “You play with better players, you get better opportunities. Contrary to what a lot of people believe, in the Premier, you can get sometimes more time, Championship, sometimes you don’t.

“You don’t get as clever a player, but you may get a little bit more time in the Premier League. I think that’s where he is benefitting from, that extra second, and he is a presence in terms of he is fast, he is playing on the edge and getting these types of goals.”

Proving his critics wrong

When Leeds got promoted to the Premier League at the end of last season, some observers would have been sceptical about Bamford.

So far this season, the 27-year-old has proved his critics wrong, and it is likely that he will continue to bang in the goals in the coming weeks and months for Marcelo Bielsa’s Leeds.
