The recruitment team at Manchester United will be scratching their heads after a summer transfer target made a costly error at Euro 2024.

The Red Devils are set to experience a busy summer window as Sir Jim Ratcliffe looks to make his mark as the club’s new owner.

With the future of Erik ten Hag now settled and secure, Manchester United can turn their attention to recruitment.

Not only will the club be keeping a keen eye on their eight players present at Euro 2024, but it is also a chance for the scouts and recruitment team to get one final glimpse at their top targets.

HITC understands that Manchester United are interested in Antonio Silva this summer with scouts sent to watch the Benfica centre-back earlier this year.

United are on the lookout for defensive reinforcements this summer and the 20-year-old was given his chance to impress at the Euros with a starting spot against Georgia.

Antonio Silva for Portugal at Euro 2024

Roberto Martinez could afford to rotate his Portugal side for their final group stage match against Georgia but the poor performance that followed was still a surprise.

Antonio Silva was given his first appearance at the tournament in a three-man defence alongside Danilo Pereira and Goncalo Inacio but he looked uncomfortable throughout and conceded a penalty with a poor challenge in the second half.

Portuguese outlet O Jogo said Silva had a “game to forget” after handing him a two-out-of-10 rating for his performance.

They added: “He gave Kvaratskhelia the lead with an unbelievable pass (2′) and conceded the penalty for the second goal. Could only be worse if he had scored an own goal or been sent off.”

Antonio Silva was tipped to become a superstar

After a superb season with Benfica, Silva headed to the Euros as one of the most highly-rated defenders across Europe.

The young centre-back certainly had a day to forget against Georgia but a move to an elite club this summer is still on the cards.

He has previously been lauded by Jamie Carragher, who said on CBS Sports on Paramount+ in 2022 that “he is going to be a superstar” following his performance against Juventus in the UEFA Champions League.
