Back in June 2021, Tottenham announced that Paulo Gazzaniga would be leaving north London after his contract expired.

The Argentina international wasn’t short of offers, and actually rejected a move to Aston Villa in order to remain in London.

Gazzaniga eventually moved to west London with Fulham, where he has enjoyed a successful campaign at Craven Cottage under Marco Silva.

What’s the story?

Well, the 30-year-old has already won a trophy with the Cottagers, following four years without silverware at Tottenham.

Gazzaniga made 12 Championship appearances throughout the campaign, as Fulham won the league title following a 7-0 win over Luton on Monday.

The South American conceded 13 goals in those 12 outings, while also keeping three clean sheets along the way.

Gazzaniga had to share the No.1 shirt with Marek Rodak throughout the season, although he still played his part in what has been a hugely successful campaign.

Tottenham should’ve kept Paulo Gazzaniga

In our view, Daniel Levy should’ve made sure that Gazzaniga was given a contract extension, rather than releasing him.

The Argentine is a much better goalkeeper than Pierluigi Gollini, who was signed on a season-long loan from Atalanta to compete with Hugo Lloris.

Unfortunately, the Italian has grown frustrated with life under Antonio Conte, and wants to leave Spurs as soon as possible.

Gazzaniga never kicked up a similar fuss, and was able to offer a reliable presence in between the sticks whenever Lloris was unavailable.

Now, with Gollini’s season-long loan set to expire in June, it’s back to the drawing board for Spurs as they look to sign a new backup glovesman.

Athletic Bilbao shot-stopper Unai Simon is believed to be on the shortlist, while West Brom’s Sam Johnstone – an England international – is also a target.

Keep an eye on this situation, as we expect Tottenham to sign another goalkeeper this summer.
