Matthias Ginter is facing an uncertain future at Borussia Monchengladbach with the reported Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur target at odds with his Bundesliga bosses over a new contract, as reported by BILD.
This is not the first nor the last time that a 2014 World Cup winner has been linked with a move to the Premier League.
But, while Ginter always resisted the temptation to push for a move away from Borussia Park, the story feels slightly different this time.
The Germany international centre-back is set to become a free agent in the summer of 2022.
According to BILD, a contract extension looks increasingly unlikely at this stage, with Ginter ‘irritated’ by the lack of serious offers put forward by sporting director Max Eberl.
Interestingly, Eberl admitted recently that Gladbach would look to cash in on players with just one year left on their deal.
That may explain why Ginter is understood to be available for a cut-price fee of £21 million with two months of the transfer window remaining.
Is Matthias Ginter set to reunite with Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool?
The report adds that Tottenham have identified the commanding central defender as a potential solution to their defensive problems.
Ginter enhanced his reputation with an impressive display in the Euro 2020 clash with France on Tuesday night too, producing the kind of backs-to-the-wall performance that had German legend Lothar Matthaus comparing him with a certain Sergio Ramos.
“Ginter has become a leader at the back, in a similar way to Ramos at Real,” Matthaus told Sky, via Goal. “He reminds me of Ramos.”
“He’s full of confidence nowadays, and has become a big personality. In the past, he wasn’t as vocal and tended to follow the pack. Now he’s taking on responsibility and making important decisions – defensively and in attack.

“His current contract is up in 2022, but Borussia need to sit down with him and tie him down for longer. Ginter has made huge strides of late, and is only going to get better.”
As it stands, however, it looks like Gladbach are not exactly following Matthaus’s advice to the letter.
The reported Liverpool target has made huge strides since he played for Anfield boss Jurgen Klopp during his time at Borussia Dortmund too.
Klopp’s BVB side paid £9 million to sign Ginter in 2014, but he struggled for consistency before moving on to Gladbach three years later.
