Reported Liverpool target Denis Zakaria could be sold by Borussia Monchengladbach this summer after sporting director Max Eberl warned of the danger of contracts running out, as reported by BILD.

Gladbach have already lost head coach Marco Rose to Dortmund but there’s a nagging feeling the exodus is only just beginning.

Germany international Florian Neuhaus and star striker Alassane Plea also face uncertain futures at Borussia Park.

Zakaria, meanwhile, has seen his price tag fall from £35 million to £18 million after deciding against extending a contract that’s due to run out in July 2022.

BILD reports Liverpool have identified the all-action Switzerland international, a midfielder so versatile he’d make Daniel Day Lewis look typecast, as a successor to Gini Wijnaldum in Jurgen Klopp’s engine room.

And with Eberl making his feelings clear, all signs suggest Zakaria will have a new home at the start of next season.

“We cannot and do not want to simply let the contracts expire with players who have cost us money,” Eberl explains.

“Both sides have to think about what the next sensible step is.”

In March, Sky reported Liverpool face competition from Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City.

They, too, are under pressure to replace a long-serving midfielder, with Fernandinho expected to follow Sergio Aguero out the door.
