Glenn Middleton has posted on Instagram after permanently leaving Rangers Football Club to join Dundee United – and plenty have given their reaction, including current Ibrox stars Scott Arfield and Ryan Jack, wishing him luck.

England-born Middleton, 22, was the first academy player to really break through into Steven Gerrard’s Rangers side during the Liverpool legend’s era as manager. He played 29 times for the Gers, scoring five goals and creating five.

But following moments like his goal away in Russia against Spartak Moscow, he has struggled to hold down a regular place in the Rangers side. He has been on loan four times, including two spells at St. Johnstone.

The 23-time Scotland Under-21 international played 35 times for the Saints last season. That has seemingly convinced Dundee United to make their move, signing Middleton on a permanent basis for an undisclosed figure.

He took to Instagram to confirm his move from Rangers to Dundee United, underlining his excitement at the new challenge. Middleton made his debut for United on Saturday, during a 1-1 draw with Kilmarnock.

Arfield and Jack reaction: Middleton is leaving Rangers for Dundee United

Ultimately, it is the best move for Middleton. He leaves a Rangers side that boast plenty out wide, especially after the signings of Malik Tillman, Rabbi Matondo and Tom Lawrence. Ryan Kent, Scott Wright and Arfield are also options.

There is no way Middleton would have broken into the Rangers side this summer and a move was needed. Joining Dundee United, he will have the chance to fight for a place in the Europa Conference League this season.

On Thursday, United take on Dutch side AZ Alkmaar for a place in the group stages of the Conference League. He could well start. Plenty responded to his exit, including Jack, Arfield, Steven Davis and more.
