Leeds United suffered a 3-0 defeat to Chelsea in another shattering blow to their chances of surviving relegation to the Championship on Wednesday night – but Kalvin Phillips was photographed signing autographs at 11pm.

Coming into the match, Leeds needed to get something from the game given they had lost their last two – while Burnley and Everton continue to pick up points. But they were their own worst enemies, losing 3-0 to Chelsea.

Thomas Tuchel’s side took the lead early on through Mason Mount, taking advantage of some questionable Leeds defending. Then, for the second game, Leeds were down to 10 – Dan James seeing red for a horrible tackle.

Christian Pulisic and Romelu Lukaku also got goals for the Blues, pretty-much securing a top-four place. Meanwhile, the likes of Phillips and Leeds were left to rue another game in which they suffered defeat in the league.

It is clearly hurting Phillips, a boyhood Leeds fan and a player that has come through the academy. Mirror journalist David Coverdale took a photo of Phillips at 11pm, 90 minutes after full-time, still signing autographs.

Phillips signing Leeds autographs at 11pm – are the Whites down?

It looks inevitable at this stage. Yes, their run of games have been enormously tough. Not many will have expected them to get something from Manchester City, Arsenal and Chelsea. But it is the knock-on effect.

Everton and Burnley have picked up points, while Leeds have lost crucial players. Luke Ayling and James are now out for the season, joining injured stars Patrick Bamford and Stuart Dallas. They look beleaguered.

Leeds need fight, some inspiration from somewhere and the support of the club – typified by Luciano Becchio’s Tweet last night – gives them hope.
