Rangers star John Lundstram might count himself lucky not to have been sent off in the Europa League final. That is, after the Rangers star clashed with Sebastian Rode – and Rode posted a picture of his injury after the win.

Just six minutes into the clash on Wednesday night, Rode was forced off the field of play after receiving a boot to the head from Lundstram. The Gers midfielder was not given a yellow card, or perhaps even a red by the ref.

But it took a few minutes for play to restart with Rode receiving treatment. He eventually returned to the field of play, sporting a Terry Butcher-style headband. Frankfurt went on to win on penalties against Rangers.

Joe Aribo’s goal put Rangers ahead, only for Rafael Santos Borre – who Marc Crosas has urged Celtic to sign – saw the game go into extra-time. Borre then scored the winning penalty, after Aaron Ramsey missed from 12 yards.

Taking to Instagram in the early hours of the morning, 31-year-old Rode posted a picture of a nasty-looking scar down the middle of his forehead. The injury required stitches, but Rode was delighted to secure the win.

It would be harsh on Lundstram, despite the severity of the injury. Replays show Lundstram’s boot is no more than chest high and while his studs are showing, it is a natural position. Rode is bent down, trying to head the ball.

Lundstram could easily have seen red. But the referee – who has gained plaudits for not throwing out yellows in Seville – trusted his judgement. However, it was not enough, as Rangers come home without the trophy.
