Former Liverpool defender Phil Thompson has been critical of one Crystal Palace star for his performance for England against Spain in the 2024 European Championship final.
After making it to the final of the European Championship in Berlin, Gareth Southgate’s England fell at the final hurdle to Luis Del La Fuente’s Spain.
Southgate’s time as manager of the Three Lions has come to an end with a statement from the former Middlesbrough boss claiming that Sunday’s game against Spain was his final match as England manager.
Cole Palmer had given England hope in the final but a late goal from Mikel Oyarzabal meant Spain won the tournament and the Three Lions, like back in 2021, finished second.

Phil Thompson critical of Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi
Throughout the tournament, Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi has been one of the key figures for the Three Lions throughout the tournament.
With Manchester United’s Harry Maguire missing out on the final 26-man squad for the tournament in Germany, Guehi and Aston Villa defender Ezri Konsa were impressive.
Former Chelsea defender Guehi has been hailed for his performances in Germany with former Newcastle United manager Steve Bruce describing him as ‘absolutely terrific’.
It was a tough final for the England defender as Spain’s wingers, in particular, caused the defence big problems with Nico Williams and Lamine Yamal excelling.
Speaking on talkSPORT, former Liverpool star Phil Thompson was not impressed with the defender following the final in Berlin.
“Marc Guehi, I did think, just couple of big mistakes at times,” Thompson said. “I am looking at central defenders and you can’t afford them. A couple of times I thought you have to win that ball and he didn’t.”
Guehi has plenty of interest from the Premier League
Despite making a ‘couple of big mistakes’ in the final, Guehi has seriously impressed during the international tournament.
HITC has been told that Arsenal, Chelsea, Manchester United and Liverpool are among the sides who are interested in the defender.
Palace, however, are understood to want around £60 million for the defender amid strong interest from across England this summer.
