Phil Neville has said that Newcastle United need to sign four or five players of Premier League quality in the January transfer window, as quoted by The Daily Star.

The former Manchester United and Everton star made the comments following Newcastle’s 3-2 defeat to Leicester City at St. James’ Park in the Premier League on Saturday evening.

The Magpies are now 16th in the league table with just 15 points from 16 matches, only two points above the relegation zone.

Neville, who now works as a pundit for BBC Sport, has suggested that unless Rafael Benitez’s side make four or five signings in the January transfer window, they will get relegated to the Championship at the end of the season.

“I think what he [Shearer] is trying to say is sell it before January,” The Daily Star quotes Neville as saying while referring to Shearer’s tweet (click here to read more).

“Because if Newcastle don’t strengthen in January, they will get relegated. Because that team has got Championship quality, Championship players.

“And they need to bring in four or five players, not one or two, four or five players of Premier League quality.”

Newcastle have some good players, but overall the squad is not good enough to challenge for a top-10 finish in the Premier League.

If the Magpies do not sign any players in the January transfer window, then they will be fighting against relegation until the final weeks of the season.
