Having closely followed this year’s Ryder Cup at Bethpage Black, Phil Mickelson is a familiar face at the event.

He has been vocal in his support for the US team, following along as Europe have taken control of the duel.

Heading into Sunday, Europe hold a commanding 11.5-4.5 lead – a gap that has left US captain Keegan Bradley frustrated with how things have unfolded.

The US were down 5.5-2.5 after day one, and Europe widened that margin further by winning both of Saturday’s sessions 3-1.

Adding to the conversation around Mickelson, PGA Tour player Michael Kim and others have mentioned his name as a candidate for captaincy in 2027.

When Lee Westwood brought up the idea of Phil Mickelson leading the US Ryder Cup side in 2027, it didn’t take long for the topic to gain traction on social media. One post on X said: “Captain Phil 2027? Let the rumours begin.”

But Mickelson was quick to put any talk to rest, replying: “No rumours. My Ryder Cup involvement is over. I’m happy being a spectator and rooting for Team USA.”

Was Phil Mickelson’s decision to turn down the Ryder Cup job a good one?

Mickelson seems content with his past contributions, having collected 21.5 points across 12 appearances.

But he likely also recognises how much scrutiny comes with the role, especially given how much criticism Keegan Bradley has faced even before this year’s event wrapped up.

Some of that criticism may feel a bit harsh, but there have been a few choices this week that have not helped his case.

Bradley chose not to play J.J. Spaun in Saturday’s foursomes and continued to pair Harris English and Collin Morikawa despite their struggles. Both decisions drew plenty of scrutiny.

Mickelson might have been a strong candidate for Adare Manor, but his decision to stay out of it seems like an effort to avoid stepping into similar controversy.
