Luke Donald would have had big expectations heading into this Ryder Cup, but even he could not have predicted Scottie Scheffler going winless through his matches.
Scheffler is 0-4 so far, and with just one match left – a headline singles clash against Rory McIlroy – the tournament already looks out of reach for the US.
The Dallas native’s play has been puzzling. He is coming off another strong season, but has not looked anything like himself at Bethpage.
But from a European perspective, and especially for Luke Donald, seeing the world number one out of sorts has been just what they needed.
Donald has since shared his thoughts on why Scheffler might be having such a tough time this week.
Luke Donald breaks down Scottie Scheffler’s Ryder Cup struggles

Watching Scottie Scheffler go through this run has been difficult for plenty of golf fans. It is not often you see him this far off his usual game.
For Europe, it has worked out perfectly, but for the sport as a whole, it is strange to see a player who normally sits above the rest have such a hard time finding form.
Weighing in on what might be behind Scheffler’s issues, Luke Donald suggested that the format simply does not suit him as well.
“I have the utmost respect for Scottie Scheffler and what he’s done in the game. How he keeps continuing to be, he’s going to be one of the greatest players ever to play this game,” said Donald.
“The way he’s been playing the last three or four seasons, it’s incredible to watch. He’s great for the game.”
“But yeah, it hasn’t been his time. Obviously match play, playing with a partner, it is different. You know, there are different scenarios. You have to rely a little bit on your partners as well. So you know it is hard to do it all by yourself, but Scottie Scheffler is a champion.”
Rory McIlroy can make it a tough finish to a tough week for Scottie Scheffler
McIlroy and Scheffler are set to close out the season in the matchup everyone wanted to see.
The top two players in the world will square off, and with their match scheduled fourth, it could play a significant role in the outcome.
| 2025 PGA Tour stats | Scheffler’s ranking | McIlroy’s ranking |
| Strokes gained total | 2nd | 1st |
| Strokes gained off the tee | 6th | 1st |
| Strokes gained putting | 44th | 10th |
| Strokes gained approach to green | 4th | 19th |
| Greens in regulation % | 8th | 55th |
| Scrambling | 1st | 5th |
| Bogey avoidance | 1st | 6th |
| Driving distance | 78th | 3rd |
| Scoring average | 1st | 2nd |
With Europe needing just 2.5 points, McIlroy might have the opportunity to finish off both the tournament and what has been a rough week for Scheffler.
Based on how things have gone so far, that would not come as a shock.
If it happens, McIlroy will certainly enjoy it, while Scheffler will need some time to regroup before another demanding season begins in 2026.
