Leeds United journalist Phil Hay has shared what Andrea Radrizzani told him on a call this week about the club’s transfer plans.
As you can imagine, after United received extra investment from the San Francisco 49ers, fans were clamouring to find out about what that meant for Leeds in terms of signings.
As ever, Phil Hay was there to answer any queries in his Q&A session, and he shared what he’d heard directly from Radrizzani about Leeds’ plans.
“I couldn’t put a figure on it but they know they have to keep investing and keep improving. One of the reasons that they haven’t spent in this window is because the players they like aren’t readily available but that doesn’t change the fact that they spent most of what they could afford in the summer,” Hay wrote after a fan asked about the 49ers’ investment and what it meant for transfer spending.
“We were on a call with Radrizzani yesterday and he said that anyone with the expectation that Leeds might go big in the last few days of the January window shouldn’t kid themselves. To use his words, they’re “exposed” by the £100m outlay in the summer.”
This is somewhat disappointing to hear.
At any other time, you may expect Leeds to splash out after receiving a hefty external investment, but with the pandemic causing so many financial difficulties for football clubs, it’s no surprise to see that Leeds need to start being more frugal.
Leeds were always expected to have a quiet window, but it’s still disheartening to hear Radrizzani actually say it.
After spending close to £100m in the summer, it’s no surprise to see that the Whites want to slow things down, but that doesn’t make it any less disappointing to hear.
We’ll have to wait and see what the summer window brings, because it seems as though the January window is going to remain quiet.
