Phil Hay has shared on The Phil Hay Show podcast on The Athletic what he has been told about Leeds United head coach Marcelo Bielsa and the kind of pitch he wants at Elland Road.

The well-known and well-respected journalist, who is the Leeds correspondent for The Athletic, has disclosed what he was told by a ground staff at Elland Road about the kind of pitch Bielsa has asked for.

Hay said on The Phil Hay Show podcast on The Athletic: “I remember speaking to one of the ground staff during the covid lockdown and they said the instruction from him is always short, fast and wet. That’s how the pitch and the grass at Elland Road has to be, and the same at Thorp Arch.”

Elland Road pitch issue

The pitch at Elland Road has been the talking point in recent days following the defeat for Leeds last weekend.

Leeds suffered a 1-0 defeat at the hands of Brighton and Hove Albion at Elland Road in the Premier League last weekend.

The pitch was not in great condition, with former Aston Villa striker Gabriel Agbonlahor and Arsenal legend Martin Keown among those to criticise it.

Bouncing back

The loss to Brighton was Leeds’s third in a row in all competitions following defeats to Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League and Crawley Town in the FA Cup.

The Whites will return to action on January 26 when they take on Newcastle United away from home at St. James’ Park in the league.
