Tottenham suffered a 2-0 defeat to Nottingham Forest in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday, with Renan Lodi scoring the opener in the 50th minute.

It came as a crushing blow for Spurs, compounded by another goal from Jesse Lingard just seven minutes later, and the Tottenham fans will presumably be annoyed all over again after seeing what Emerson Royal has posted.

Tottenham man hails Nottingham Forest star

Well, the Brazil international has praised Lodi on Instagram after the pair both missed out on a place in Tite’s World Cup squad.

Emerson wrote: “Weeping lasts for a night, but joy comes in the morning! You are phenomenal brother, I love you.”

Now, that is a very kind gesture from the South American after what was a heartbreaking update for both of them, although the timing of the message might frustrate some Spurs fans.

A few will question why Emerson is praising someone who only just knocked his side out of the Carabao Cup, especially as the Tottenham No.12 is not playing too well at the moment.

However, anyone who does hold that opinion should lay off the 23-year-old, as the World Cup is a special thing for those in Brazil, and it will have felt like a punch in the gut for both him and Lodi to miss out.

Tottenham & Nottingham Forest stars must learn

In our view, Emerson and Lodi need to learn from this setback, and channel their sadness into positive performances for their sides, specifically the Tottenham man.

To be blunt, we are not quite sure how Antonio Conte continues to pick Emerson ahead of Matt Doherty and Djed Spence.

The £25.7m signing from Barcelona receives countless opportunities under the Italian, although he doesn’t seem to be getting much better.

Hopefully, Tite excluding him from the World Cup squad will act as the wake up call he so desperately needs.
