‘Phenomenal business’: Leeds journalist reacts to hearing who could come to ER in January

Well, Cody Gakpo to Leeds United isn’t going away.

The PSV Eindhoven winger was linked with a transfer to Elland Road during the summer transfer window but nothing materialised, with Manchester United also credited with an interest.

However, Fabrizio Romano tweeted earlier this week that Leeds could take another look at the Dutch winger during the January transfer window.

And Graham Smyth of The Yorkshire Evening Post, who exclusively covers the Whites, has revealed that it would be ‘phenomenal business’ if Victor Orta could make this one happen.

He told The Yorkshire Evening Post podcast: “A lot of people hanging their hat on Gakpo coming in in January. If it happened it would be phenomenal business – expensive business, because PSV can just name their price and likely they [Leeds] will face stiff competition.”

So much will depend on where exactly Leeds are come January.

If it’s looking like Jesse Marsch’s outfit will be in a relegation battle come the end of the season then Gakpo is unlikely to be champing at the bit for a transfer to West Yorkshire.

However, it could be a much better season than that for United who, despite losing 5-2 at Brentford last time around, have actually enjoyed a decent start to the Premier League campaign.

After six outings, Leeds are ninth in the standings and a 3-0 victory over Chelsea in August was the pick of their results thus far.

There’s optimism that it could be a much better season for the Whites than last time around and, really, it has to be if they’re to have any chance of luring Gakpo to Elland Road.
