Leeds plan January bid for £43m player Newcastle wanted last week

According to Fabrizio Romano, Jesse Marsch’s Leeds United are planning to make a bid for PSV winger Cody Gakpo, who was linked with Eddie Howe’s Newcastle United among other clubs in the summer transfer window.

Well-known and well-respected journalist Romano has reported on Twitter that Leeds are planning to push again for Gakpo when the transfer window opens in January.

Leeds were among the clubs who were keen on securing the services of the Netherlands international winger this summer, according to 90min.

The report last week claimed that Newcastle, Everton, Leicester City, Nottingham Forest and Manchester United also wanted to sign the PSV star.

90min added that PSV were looking for €50 million (£43.11 million) as transfer fee for the winger.

Cody Gakpo has scored six goals and given three assists in five Eredivisie appearances so far this season.

The 23-year-old Netherlands international winger scored 12 goals and gave 13 assists in 22 league starts last season, and scored seven goals and provided three assists in 22 league starts in 2020-21.

PSV are aiming to win the Eredivisie title this season, and it would be interested to see if they would be open to selling one of their best player in the middle of the campaign.
