Tottenham Hotspur versus Manchester City was the Premier League game of the weekend.

However, the Premier League announced this morning that all EFL and top-flight fixtures would be postponed after the Queen passed away on Thursday at the age of 96.

A statement from the governing body cited to ‘honour her extraordinary life and contribution to the nation, and as a mark of respect’ as rationale to cancel the latest round of fixtures.

Ryan Mason, a first-team coach on Antonio Conte’s backroom staff at Tottenham, made his feelings about the decision perfectly clear, stating that he was in complete agreement with the postponement.

However, there’s also been high-profile figures to speak out against the call, including Piers Morgan and Gary Neville.

And Peter Crouch, the former Spurs hitman, has disagreed with Mason among others and believes that the Premier League games going ahead would’ve been a fitting tribute to Her Majesty.

He tweeted:

Tottenham’s trip to Manchester City was such a big game because neither side have lost a Premier League game this season.

Conte’s troops have won four and drawn two of their opening six encounters, the exact same record as the Sky Blues so far.

And it would’ve been intriguing to see if either outfit lost their undefeated streak.

With Erling Haaland in frightening form, Pep Guardiola’s side would’ve been big favourites to beat Tottenham, but the North Londoners did the double over their Etihad Stadium counterparts last term and therefore defeat was far from a foregone conclusion for the Lilywhites.

With the Queen’s funeral set to go ahead next weekend too, it remains to be seen what becomes of that round of Premier League fixtures.
