Newcastle United haven’t enjoyed the rip-roaring start to the summer transfer window as some might have predicted.
The Magpies splashed the cash during the January transfer window on a number of signings which helped them emphatically win their Premier League relegation battle – including Bruno Guimaraes.
A 2-0 victory at home to Arsenal on the penultimate gameweek of the Premier League season offered reiteration that Newcastle were on the right track.
But apart from completing a permanent deal to sign Matt Targett – who joined on loan in January – the St James’s Park outfit haven’t been all that active as of yet.
However, they are reportedly on the brink of completing the signing of a youngster.
On Thursday it was reported that Newcastle were in talks to sign Kilmarnock prospect Charlie McArthur, labelled a ‘dream to manage‘ by his manager Tommy Wright last season.
And now The Athletic have reported that the 17-year-old is set for an adventure in the North-East.
According to The Athletic, Newcastle have agreed personal terms with McArthur, who will join for a fee of around £350,000.
As an under-18 footballer, the maximum contract he can sign with the Magpies is a three-year arrangement.
It doesn’t look it, because he’s an unknown quantity at the moment, but this is quite a coup for the Tyneside club.
In December, Liverpool and Manchester City were rumoured to be sniffing around McArthur [Football Scotland], so for Newcastle to win the race is a feather in their cap and further evidence that they’re headed in a promising direction.
