The West Ham United midfielder has been in fantastic form of late.

Hammers midfielder Pedro Obiang scored his first goal for the club during his side’s impressive 3-1 win away at Southampton on Saturday, a full 19 months after Slaven Bilic brought him to East London, and he explained how last week’s disappointing defeat to Manchester City inspired them to produce their best against the Saints, as quoted by the club’s official website.

David Gold explains why Bilic allowed young star to leave

The 24-year-old’s game is centered around positional discipline, and breaking up the opposition’s play, so in his defence, he is rarely in a position where he is presented with the opportunity to even shoot, let alone score.

But when he drilled his sweetly struck 25-yarder into the bottom corner of the net against the Saints, the monkey was finally lifted from the Spaniard’s back.

And Obiang spoke to WHUFC.com, highlighting how he and his teammates channelled their anger following their defeat to City, and harnessed it in the correct fashion against Southampton:

“It feels very, very good to score my first goal for West Ham. For the team, for the supporters and for the Club this is great, because after the game against Manchester City we were all angry. That’s normal, but after today we can be calm for this week and try to take another three points on Saturday against West Bromwich.”

It would be interesting to know if Fonte’s advice actually made a difference on Saturday

West Ham will now be looking to really push on, and, with a consistent run of form, force their way into contention for the Europa League spots.
