Paul Woolston is a former Newcastle United prospect, but the now-retired goalkeeper is a Sunderland fan, and he is basking in the glory of the Black Cats winning promotion to the Championship.

Woolston moved to the Newcastle academy when he was 10 following his departure from bitter rivals Sunderland, as reported by The Chronicle.

He joined Manchester United in November 2018 following his release by Newcastle in the summer of 2018, and called time on his career in March 2022 aged just 23.

Woolston had injury problems that caused him to give up on his playing career.

The now-retired goalkeeper, though, still seems to be enjoying football and is over the moon to see Sunderland win promotion to the Championship via the playoffs, as you can see from his tweets below.

Sunderland, who have featured in a Netflix documentary, beat Wycombe Wanderers 2-0 at Wembley Stadium in London in the League One playoff final on Saturday.

Goals from Elliot Embleton and Ross Stewart saw Sunderland get the job done.

The Black Cats, a former Premier League club, are now back in the Championship.
