Paul Merson has said on Sky Sports News (1:41pm, December 18, 2021) that Tottenham Hotspur central defender Eric Dier relaxes on the ball a bit too much.

The former Arsenal star believes that since Dier can also play in midfield, the Tottenham player takes a few too many touches on the ball.

The Sky Sports pundit has added that he likes Dier as a player.

Merson said: “I like Dier. I think Dier is a good player. I do like Dier. I think sometimes he finds the game a little bit too easy. I think he relaxes on the ball too much and takes a few chances. I think that’s because he finds the game easier because he is a holding midfield player.”

Important player for Tottenham

Dier has established himself as an important player for Tottenham over the years.

The 27-year-old is now one of the main members of the back-three in Antonio Conte’s Tottenham team.

Now, over the years, Dier has had his critics.

However, in our opinion, the England international is a very good central defender.

And his ability to play in holding midfield does give Conte another option.

Yes, Cristiano Romero is a more ‘natural’ centre-back, and there will be other centre-backs in Europe who are much better than Dier.

However, for now, Dier’s importance to the Tottenham team cannot be undermined.

The Tottenham no. 15 has played 14 times in the Premier League so far this season.

Dier played 28 times in the Premier League and made five starts in the Europa League for Spurs last season.
