Paul Merson hails ‘amazing footballer’ who has excelled at Euro 2024, Arsenal and Man City are interested

Paul Merson has hailed one ‘top drawer’ Euro 2024 player who has been linked to Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City.

Manchester City have been one of the quieter sides out of the top six when it comes to signings this summer with the permanent addition of Savio the only business done by the Premier League champions.

A midfield addition is understood to be one of City’s top priorities with Newcastle United midfielder Bruno Guimaraes understood to be of interest to the Citizens.

City wanted Lucas Paqueta but because of his alleged betting breaches, a deal is not possible but Euro 2024 star Dani Olmo is understood to be an alternative.

HITC has reported that City are indeed interested in the Spanish midfielder but with Kevin De Bruyne and Bernardo Silva remaining at the club, he is not seen as a priority.

Barcelona are understood to have held talks with the player’s camp but a move for another Spanish star in Nico Williams is understood to be the priority. Arsenal are also understood to be keen.

Speaking to SportsKeeda, former Arsenal midfielder Paul Merson has been full of praise for the RB Leipzig ace who has shone at Euro 2024.

“The touch to set himself up and the finish were top drawer,” Merson said. “I’m glad it didn’t go down as an own goal as Olmo deserves to be credited for that moment of brilliance.

“I think he’s been absolutely brilliant in the knockouts and he wasn’t even playing at the start of the tournament.

“Amazing footballer – you look around and think he would play for most sides across the continent.”

Olmo would be a very smart addition for City

With City pivoting away from the potential signing of West Ham’s Paqueta, Olmo could well be a brilliant alternative for the Premier League champions.

City have not replaced Ilkay Gundogan since the German’s departure from the Etihad Stadium in 2023 but Olmo could be exactly that.

A midfielder with goalscoring prowess is exactly what the club need and Olmo, who has shone during the international tournament in Germany, could be the player they have been looking for.
