In 2019, Harvey Elliott was making history when he, at the time, became the Premier League’s youngest-ever player.

At 16 years and 30 days old, the Fulham academy product was sending out vibes and messages to the footballing world to remember his name.

It didn’t take Jurgen Klopp and Liverpool too long to sign the versatile midfielder, who came off the bench on Saturday and helped his side to a 2-1 win at Crystal Palace by scoring a left-footed stunner in stoppage-time.

Even though he is 20-years-old, Owen Hargreaves thinks everyone in that Liverpool side look up to him when out on the pitch, as he noted Cody Gakpo and Mohamed Salah, as he told Premier League Productions (11/12/23 at 2:45 pm).

The former Bayern Munich star described Harvey Elliott as a ‘lovely football player’ and how all of his teammates just want to give him the ball.

Even though the England U21 international has now been around for a few years, including a brilliant loan spell at Blackburn Rovers, he is still very young.

But Owen Hargreaves, who played in many pressure games during his career, suggested that there are older shoulders on that head and that he is someone who Jurgen Klopp has ‘a lot of trust in’.

Harvey Elliott playing beyond his years

“It was interesting when he came on with Gakpo,” said Hargreaves. “All the boys looked to him.

“You know what it’s like. You know a player is good when the boys are giving him the ball. When you have it, you just give it to me and it’s like ‘go on, give us something and create something’, then Mo (Salah) goes inside.

“There is a lot of trust in Harvey Elliott’s ability because he is a lovely football player.”

England call for Harvey Elliott?

You imagine it won’t be too long before Gareth Southgate knocks on that door and hands Elliott a chance in the England senior side.

On one hand, there are some high-quality players in midfield for England and there is some serious competition.

But, on the other, certain players get picked that don’t deserve that recognition because they aren’t in form or they are playing in a lesser league.

Saying that, youngsters Cole Palmer and Rico Lewis did receive their maiden calls during the last international break, so you would imagine, ahead of Euro 2024, Elliott still has a chance.
