Neco Williams has now told Liverpool that he wants to stay at Anfield for the remainder of the season, amid late interest from Championship side Bournemouth in a loan transfer.
That’s according to The Athletic [31/01, 10:25], who report Williams wants a chance to stay and fight for minutes. The defender believes he can play a role in Jurgen Klopp’s side in the coming months, given the Reds are challenging for silverware across multiple competitions.
Williams has rarely featured for the Merseyside natives so far this season, making just eight appearances so far. He has also only featured for a total 387-minutes, including only seven-minutes in Premier League fixtures. His sole top-flight game also came back on October 16.
The right-back has been an unused substitute in 11 of the Reds’ 14 league games since beating Watford in October. He also assisted Roberto Firmino in stoppage-time in the rout.
Williams to deny Bournemouth loan transfer for Liverpool defender
Bournemouth are on alert to Williams’ lack of games at Liverpool as they eye late transfers in pursuit of promotion. The Daily Star report the Cherries submitted an enquiry over the weekend for the Wales international, which the Anfield hierarchy were considering.
The report also claimed Williams is keen to secure regular minutes as he fears for his place in the Wales squad. Other Championship sides are also keen on the 17-cap talent, who Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain has called ‘outstanding’ previously.
But Williams appears to have pulled a U-turn over possibly leaving Anfield for Scott Parker’s south coast side. Now, he wants to stay and fight for his place under Klopp, despite having severe competition from Trent Alexander-Arnold on Merseyside for any regular minutes.
His two Champions League starts from three group stage appearances this term came after the Reds had already progressed. Klopp also dropped the youngster for their Carabao Cup semi-finals with Arsenal after opening their wins over Preston and Leicester.
