Jose Enrique has claimed that it is best for all parties if Xherdan Shaqiri leaves Liverpool this summer.
The Switzerland international has seen his importance decline gradually since joining the Reds from Stoke City three years ago.
Last season, Shaqiri managed only five Premier League starts under Jurgen Klopp.
Speculation is rife that Lazio are keen on the player and that the former Bayern Munich man himself has told Liverpool that he’s keen to leave [The Athletic].
And former Liverpool defender Enrique believes now is the right time to sever ties.
He told Empire of the Kop: ” believe he can be an outstanding player. But for the way we play, I believe the best thing for both parties is [for Shaqiri] to leave and try to get as much as we can for him.”
Should he go?
Simply put, yes.
Shaqiri is still only 29 and therefore remains in the prime of his career, but it’d be a terrible shame if somebody of his ability spent the remainder of his peak years on Liverpool’s bench.
Let’s face it, he’s never going to be a first-team player so long as Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah are there.
And it seems like Diogo Jota and possibly even Harvey Elliott are now ahead of him in Klopp’s pecking order.
A move to Italy is, as Enrique says, best for everyone involved.
