Newcastle United are interested in signing Ousmane Dembele from Barcelona in the January transfer window, according to Sport.

Sport are reporting this morning that Newcastle are determined to sign Barcelona forward Dembele this month.

Premier League club Newcastle and La Liga outfit Barcelona are in talks over a transfer and hope to reach an agreement before the January window closes.

Sport have added that the ball is now in the court of Dembele, adding that Newcastle see the France international as their own Robinho.

The report in the Spanish news outlet has said that just like Manchester City launched their now-successful era with the signing of Robinho from Real Madrid in September 2008, Newcastle want to make Dembele their big statement this month.

Could Ousmane Dembele join Newcastle from Barcelona?

In our view, it is unlikely that Newcastle will be able to sign Dembele from Barcelona in the January transfer window.

Unless, of course, they pay the forward an astronomical salary.

The 24-year-old former Borussia Dortmund star is out of contract at Barcelona at the end of the season.

So, Dembele could just wait for a few more months and then pick from the clubs interested in him.

As a free agent, the forward will also command a better salary.

Moreover, a number of clubs are interested in Dembele, such as Liverpool and Arsenal.

Joining a Newcastle team who could get relegated from the Premier League at the end of the season may not be too tempting for Dembele right now.
