Benfica’s Champions League elimination could have positive repercussions for Tottenham Hotspur in their alleged pursuit of two Eagles players.
Tottenham have been linked with moves for the right-back Tomas Tavares (Sunday Mirror) and the striker Carlos Vinicius (Football.London) in the last few weeks.
And, according to Record, Benfica are now being forced to make two ‘big sales’ as a direct result of their failure to qualify for this year’s group stage.
It remains to be seen what sort of figure would count as a ‘big sale’.
It had been suggested, however, that Tottenham would have to pay around £9 million for Tavares and up to £54.7m for Vinicius.
Although, considering Benfica’s apparent need to do business, discounts cannot be ruled out.
Tottenham have already signed one new right-back this summer, in Matt Doherty from Wolverhampton Wanderers, but further additions could be sought if Serge Aurier departs.
Spurs are, though, widely thought to be pursuing another striker to compete with Harry Kane.
Vinicius is, incidentally, said to share an agent, Jorge Mendes, with both Doherty and the Tottenham manager Jose Mourinho.
