According to The Sunday Mirror (23/08, p65), Tottenham Hotspur want to sign Benfica right back Tomas Tavares this summer.
It’s claimed that Spurs have been scouting Tavares ahead of a possible deal, but they aren’t alone in pursuing him.
Atalanta are interested too, and it’s believed to be a straight fight between Spurs and the Italians for Tavares, who is valued at around £9million.
Who is Tomas Tavares?
Tavares, 19, has come up through the Benfica ranks, and made 27 first-team appearances last season.
The teenager has made almost 40 appearances for Portugal across various youth levels, and has been tipped for a bright future.
Tavares stands at 6ft 2in tall, possessing the size that Jose Mourinho may like whilst also quick and adept on the ball going forward.

What about Timothy Castagne?
One player who has to be brought up here is Castagne, given that Atalanta may be eyeing Tavares as his replacement.
Castagne is a Spurs target too, and Le10 Sport reported in July that the Belgian wing back wants to speak to Jose Mourinho about a possible move.
Atalanta may fancy Tavares as his successor, with with Spurs in for him as well as Castagne, the Italians could be in a tricky position.
