For some time now, Matt Doherty has been expected to be one of a number of players that leave Tottenham this month. But he impressed against Leicester after coming on – so, has he just saved his Tottenham career?
Football London reporter Alasdair Gold speculated earlier this month that the FA Cup clash against Morecambe might be the Ireland star’s last for Tottenham. But he has remained, playing twice since.
He featured in the second Carabao Cup semi-final leg against Chelsea, and then replaced Emerson Royal at half-time on Wednesday night. Brazil international Emerson, had in no uncertain terms, a stinker of a first 45.
The stats prove as much. WhoScored give him a rating of 6.24, Tottenham’s worst on the night. It comes after the Evening Standard reported this month, that Conte is unconvinced – and wants Emerson replaced.
Doherty saves Tottenham spell with Leicester cameo, ahead of Emerson
So, both right-backs are playing for their future. But if we are judging purely on Wednesday night, Doherty was head and shoulders above his much more expensive rival. WhoScored report he made four key passes.
That was Tottenham’s best alongside Harry Winks, despite only playing 45 minutes. Indeed, he got the assist for Steven Bergwijn’s first goal – showing bravery to get on the end of Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg’s pass.
The Ireland man looked confident in possession, but also looked to go forward whereas Emerson looked nervous – misplacing passes and hesitating when urgency was required.
If Wednesday night was a platform for both to save their Tottenham futures, Doherty one the duel. But time will tell, and time might be on Emerson’s side given he is younger, and brought to the club later.
