Alasdair Gold has suggested on his YouTube channel that Sunday’s FA Cup clash against Morecambe could be Matt Doherty’s last outing for Tottenham. The Ireland ace was hooked at half-time against Chelsea.
Doherty, 29, has endured a dismal time at Tottenham. Joining the club in the summer of 2020 from Wolves, the Ireland international has really struggled to win over Spurs fans. He has only played 40 times in all competitions.
On Wednesday night, the ex-Wolves man played on the left flank of a 3-4-3 system as Antonio Conte looked to rest Sergio Reguilon. Unfortunately, it simply did not work. Ally McCoist thinks he looked “uncomfortable”.
The Express report that Wolves have made a bid to re-sign Doherty and that a deal could go through soon. Gold adds weight to that report, stating that Sunday’s clash against Morecambe could be his last game in a Spurs shirt.
“I wonder if that is one of the last times we see Matt Doherty, he maybe plays against Morecambe and then perhaps goes off to try and get some regular football. It just hasn’t worked for him, a real shame,” Gold said.
Gold on Doherty: Tottenham star needs to go, unfortunately
Most Tottenham fans would have loved Doherty to shine under Conte. On paper, and considering his form at Wolves, the right wing-back role looked ideal for Doherty. But the £65k-a-week (Spotrac) has not won Conte over.
That was more than evident on Wednesday night, when he hooked Doherty at half-time – replacing him with midfielder Tanguy Ndombele. Spurs improved in the second 45, matching Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.
For the good of Doherty’s career, and his mainstay status in Ireland’s squad, Doherty needs to join a side where he is playing regular football. Perhaps a return to Wolves would be just what Doherty needs.
